  3. Enlaza las ideas con conectores («firstly», «in addition», «however», «therefore»): la cohesión es uno de los cuatro criterios desde 2025.

3.2 Over the last few years, the number of teenagers suffering from stress and anxiety has increased significantly in many developed countries. Schools, parents, and health organisations are debating possible solutions to improve students’ well-being and reduce pressure. Some experts believe that schools should not give homework or hold traditional exams, while others argue that it is necessary for academic progress. Write an opinion essay on whether homework and/or exams should be limited or abolished for secondary school students, giving reasons and examples to support your view.

Many people wonder whether homework and exams should disappear to reduce teenagers’ stress. In my opinion, they should be limited, but not abolished.

To begin with, the current system puts too much pressure on students. Many of us spend the evenings finishing worksheets and revising for tests, so we have little time to sleep, exercise or see our friends. For example, a classmate of mine stopped enjoying school because of the amount of work she had to hand in every week.

On the other hand, we cannot simply get rid of everything. Exams show teachers and students what has really been learned, and a reasonable amount of homework helps us practise at our own pace.

In conclusion, schools should set less homework, replace some exams with projects and let students rest. That would protect their well-being without harming their progress.

Aquí hay pasivas y subordinadas («Exams show teachers and students what has really been learned») y modales («we cannot simply get rid of everything»).
Por ejemplo, «finishing worksheets and revising for tests», «well-being».
Aquí, «To begin with», «On the other hand» e «In conclusion» ordenan el ensayo, y «so we have little time to sleep, exercise or see our friends» une causa y consecuencia.
La postura aparece al principio («they should be limited, but not abolished»), y el ejemplo concreto es «a classmate of mine stopped enjoying school».

3.2 Up to 2025, Catalonia suffered from serious water supply problems that affected agriculture, industries, and personal use at home due to the prolonged absence of rainfall. After years of drought, Catalonia introduced rules to control water usage, and not everybody agrees with them. In my opinion, the measures were necessary, but they were not always fair.

First, limiting consumption was essential, because the reservoirs were almost empty and farmers, industries and families all depended on them. For instance, limits on watering gardens and filling swimming pools helped to save a considerable amount of water.

However, the regulations affected everyone in the same way, regardless of how much water each person used. Households that were already careful had to follow the same limits as those that wasted water. It would have been fairer to charge higher prices for excessive consumption.

In conclusion, I support these policies, but I believe they should reward responsible behaviour and focus on the biggest consumers.

3.1 In many households, traditional dishes are disappearing, and only the older generations of the family still cook them, whereas the young tend to prefer some form of fast food. Your teacher has organized a class debate in which you will have to defend traditional food. As a conclusion to the debate, the teacher would like you to write an opinion essay with your views on the topic. In your text you should mention why you think this is happening, examples of recipes that are being lost, the advantages that these dishes have and why it is important to keep this heritage.

Traditional cooking is slowly disappearing from our homes, and I believe we should defend it.

I think there are two main reasons for this. Fast food is cheap and quick, and modern families rarely have hours to spend in the kitchen. As a result, grandparents are often the only ones who still know how to prepare slow-cooked dishes such as escudella or cap i pota, which my generation rarely tastes any more.

These recipes have clear advantages. They are usually made with fresh, local ingredients, so they are healthier than most takeaways, and cooking them together brings families around the table.

Above all, keeping this heritage matters because a recipe carries a community’s history. If we stop cooking these dishes, we lose a piece of our identity. Therefore, we should ask our grandparents to teach us before it is too late.

La respuesta modelo

In my opinion, advertising has a far greater influence on our decisions than most of us would like to admit.

Firstly, adverts are designed by experts in persuasion. They use catchy slogans, attractive celebrities and emotional stories to make us feel that a product will improve our lives.

Secondly, there are serious ethical questions. Some campaigns target young children, who often cannot tell the difference between entertainment and a sales pitch, while others promise unrealistic results, for example with diet products. Companies should be honest about what they sell.

Finally, advertising shapes our values. When every advert shows a perfect body or a luxury lifestyle, success starts to be measured by what we own rather than by who we are.

To sum up, advertising is not harmful in itself, but we need stricter rules and, above all, the habit of questioning what we see.

Few of us would give up the freedom that air travel offers, yet its effect on the climate is undeniable. In my opinion, the solution is not to ban flying but to make it cleaner and fairer.

First, short flights should be replaced by trains wherever a good rail connection exists. Barcelona to Madrid takes only a few hours by high-speed train, with far less pollution. Governments should therefore invest in railways and stop giving aircraft fuel a tax advantage.

Second, people who fly most often should pay more. A family taking one holiday flight a year should not be treated like a frequent flyer. The extra money could fund cleaner aircraft.

In short, flying will remain part of modern life, but we must handle it responsibly. With better trains, fairer prices and new technology, we can enjoy the world without damaging it.

Parents understandably want their children to succeed at school, but I believe hobbies deserve far more attention than they receive.

First of all, some hobbies could easily become school subjects. Music, photography and coding, for example, teach discipline and creativity, and many employers value those skills. A weekly workshop would let students discover talents that traditional lessons never reveal.

As for parents, I think they should listen rather than forbid. A teenager who is passionate about painting or football will probably work harder in every area of life. Instead of saying that hobbies are a waste of time, parents could agree on a balance: homework first, then a fixed time for the activity the child loves.

To sum up, hobbies help young people grow, so schools and families should support them. Good grades matter, but happiness and motivation matter too.

La respuesta modelo

In my view, governments should not forbid people from choosing how they travel, but they do have a duty to guide those choices with environmental rules.

The first reason is that transport is one of the main sources of pollution. If nobody intervenes, the number of flights and cars will keep growing, and so will the damage to the climate. Regulation, such as limits on short domestic flights or low-emission zones in city centres, can reduce emissions quickly.

The second reason is fairness. When the rules are the same for everyone, nobody feels they are making sacrifices alone. For example, many European cities already restrict the most polluting vehicles, and their air quality has improved.

Some people argue that such measures limit personal freedom. However, freedom does not include harming others. Therefore, I believe regulation, combined with cheap public transport, is a reasonable and necessary answer.

In my opinion, current measures fall short, and governments should act far more firmly to protect wildlife.

Firstly, creating national parks is a good start, but laws mean little without enforcement. Many protected areas have too few rangers, so poachers and illegal loggers operate almost freely. Governments should invest in more staff and modern technology to monitor these areas.

Secondly, habitats are shrinking because of farming, roads and urban growth. If a government approves a motorway through a nature reserve, no declaration of protection will save the species that live there. Stricter limits on construction, and real penalties for companies that damage the environment, are essential.

Some argue that protection is too expensive, but healthy ecosystems also bring income through tourism.

In conclusion, protecting animals requires more than good intentions. Governments must act more forcefully before it is too late.

La respuesta modelo

I believe football has become much more than a sport, and that it has partly lost its original spirit.

To begin with, money now decides almost everything. A few wealthy clubs can sign the best players in the world, so smaller teams rarely have a chance of winning major competitions. Fans know in advance who the favourites are, and unexpected victories are becoming extremely rare.

In addition, many players change clubs for huge salaries, which weakens their bond with the supporters. When a star leaves for a richer team, it is hard to believe that the badge matters more than the contract.

Nevertheless, the game itself has not disappeared. Every weekend, thousands of children and amateur teams play for pure enjoyment.

In short, professional football is now a huge business, but the original spirit survives wherever people play simply for fun.

In my opinion, young people in our country stay with their parents for longer mainly for economic reasons, although cultural factors also play a part.

The first and most important reason is the cost of housing. Rents are very high and salaries, especially for those who have just finished their studies, are low. In addition, many young people only find temporary contracts, so they cannot count on a stable income.

A second reason is cultural. In Southern Europe, family ties are traditionally strong, and living together is seen as normal rather than as a failure. Parents often provide meals and emotional support, so young people feel no urgency to become independent.

To sum up, although tradition matters, I believe that the lack of affordable housing and stable jobs is what keeps young people at home.

I believe that governments should encourage COVID-19 vaccination rather than make it compulsory.

First of all, a vaccine is a medical intervention, and individuals have the right to decide what happens to their own bodies. Forcing people to be vaccinated may violate that principle, and it could also increase distrust in public institutions.

Furthermore, there are effective alternatives. Clear information campaigns and trusted doctors explaining the benefits can persuade hesitant people, because trust usually convinces more people than threats.

Admittedly, supporters of compulsory vaccination argue that it protects vulnerable people and helps hospitals to cope. This is a serious concern; however, a rule that many citizens resist is difficult to enforce, and punishments rarely change deeply held opinions.

To conclude, convincing people is slower than forcing them, but it builds the trust and cooperation that any future health crisis will require.
