  1. El 2023 (extraordinària, sèrie 2), «The ball game was sacred to Mesoamerican cultures and» porta a una de quatre terminacions.

El 2024 (extraordinària, sèrie 3), «Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the text?» demana l’opció que el text desmenteix o no sosté.

  1. Són preguntes amb «?» com «How did the horses arrive on the island?»

  1. El 2022 (extraordinària, sèrie 3), «The word futile is used in the text in paragraph 5. A synonym for futile is» demana el sentit que té aquí, no el que recordis d’altres vegades.

  1. Apareix com «best summarizes the content of the article» (2022, extraordinària, sèrie 3, 2.8) o «the author suggests that» (2024, ordinària, sèrie 5, 2.8): en dos dels tres casos ha estat l’última pregunta, i tracta de tot el text.

STONE AGE BABIES HAD BETTER PARENTING THAN TODAY!

Modern life may have made many things easier, but scientists say that raising a child is certainly not one of them. A study of modern hunter-gatherer groups that has been recently published in the journal Developmental Psychology suggested that our Stone Age ancestors gave their children better childcare than we do today. Researchers from Cambridge University found that children among the Mbendjele BaYaka in the Republic of Congo not only received nine hours of care a day from up to 15 different caregivers, but also that crying children were attended to by either the mother or some individual in the mother’s support network more than half of the time, this way giving the mums more time to rest. The study’s authors say that these findings suggest that modern parenting methods may be at odds with children’s evolutionary programmed needs.

Dr Nikhil Chaudhary, lead author of the study, says that insights into these modern hunter-gatherer societies can give us a lot of detail about how humans lived in the Stone Age, which is the period in human prehistory that covers 95 % of human technological prehistory. “For most of our evolutionary history, humans have lived as hunter-gatherers,” said Dr Chaudhary. “Therefore, contemporary hunter-gatherer communities such as the Mbendjele BaYaka can offer valuable clues as to whether there are certain childbearing systems to which infants, and their mothers, may be psychologically adapted.”

The Mbendjele BaYaka are a nomadic group who live in the jungles in the North of the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. They are a traditional hunter-gatherer society that practices hunting, fishing, foraging, and honey collection for sustenance. While some Mbendjele communities have become settled and integrated with local economies, many remain mobile and continue to inhabit the forest. Those that are still nomadic live in multifamily camps of between 20 to 80 individuals, consisting of a number of huts in which families live.

Evolutionary anthropologists stayed with the Mbendjele BaYaka between March and July 2014, observing children for 12 daylight hours and recording how often they were cared for and by whom. The researchers found that between 10 and 20 different caregivers would be involved in looking after a child and that a mother’s support system would respond to more than half of their baby’s crying episodes. Furthermore, children were almost never left alone and spent long periods of time in physical contact with adults or receiving close care from them. When children cried they were attended to in under 10 seconds in half of cases and in under 25 seconds 90 % of the time.

Older infants and adolescents were also often involved in caregiving, which the report’s authors suggest gives them experience and helps reduce anxiety around parenting. This seems to point to the fact that children may be evolutionarily prepared to expect high levels of attention and physical contact from several different caregivers. However, in Western countries the provision of high-quality child support is limited, with parenting manuals often expecting babies to spend extended periods of time playing alone.

The study also notes that Stone Age societies may have better prioritized giving mothers a rest. In Western societies, the authors write, it is common for childcare to be used only to give parents time to go to work rather than time for themselves. This means that parents have no time to rest or recover, in total contrast to the parenting practices of both modern hunter-gatherers and our Neolithic ancestors. Co-author and child psychologist Dr Annie Swanepoel says that “support for mothers also has numerous benefits for children such as reducing the risk of neglect and abuse and improving maternal wellbeing, which in turn improves maternal care.” And yet, throughout the whole of human history, it seems that parents have never been under such intense pressure and faced such a lack of support as they do in modern times.

WHAT YOUR JEANS CAN (AND DO) HIDE

Paris, Milan, New York… These are some of the world’s most prestigious fashion catwalks. There, young women and men graciously parade to impress elite guests and TV watchers with the surprising, fabulous creativity of the most renowned fashion designers. Yet, regardless of the amazing costs of such shows, there is a hidden price that Mother Nature pays (and which is not included in the price tag).

Let’s start with the case of innocent blue jeans: it takes around 7,500 litres of water to make just one single pair. Know what this means? It is equivalent to the amount of water the average person drinks over a period of seven years. That’s just one of the many startling facts that emerge from recent environmental research, and which show the real cost of staying fashionable.

When we think of industries that have a harmful effect on the environment, manufacturing, energy, transport and even food production come to mind. But the fashion industry is considered by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to be the second most polluting industry in the world. In fact, according to UNCTAD, some 93 billion cubic metres of water—enough to meet the needs of five million people—are used by the fashion industry annually, and around half a million tons of microfibre, which is the equivalent of 3 million barrels of oil, are now being dumped into the ocean every year.

As for carbon emissions, the industry is responsible for more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. “The dominant business model in the sector is that of ‘fast fashion’, whereby consumers are offered constantly changing collections at low prices, and encouraged to frequently buy and discard clothes,” UNCTAD further explains. And it warns that the trend is responsible for “a plethora of negative social, economic and environmental impacts and, with clothing production doubling between 2000 and 2014, it is crucially important to ensure that clothes are produced as ethically and sustainably as possible.”

For its part, UN Environment provides more conservative figures. It says that considering cotton production, manufacture, transport and washing, it takes 3,781 litres of water to make one pair of jeans. Furthermore, the process equates to around 33.4 kilograms of carbon equivalent emitted, like driving 111 kilometres or watching 246 hours of TV on a big screen. Even just washing our clothes releases plastic microfibres and other pollutants into the environment, contaminating our oceans and drinking water, and entering the food chain, UN Environment warns, and adds that around 20 % of global industrial water pollution is from dyeing and textile treatment.

Some studies estimate that the average garment is worn ten times before being discarded. Demand for clothing is projected to rise 2 % a year—but the number of times we wear a garment has dropped one third compared to the early 2000s. This waste costs money and the value of natural resources. Of the total fibre input used for clothing, 87 % is incinerated or sent to landfill. Overall, one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or incinerated every second. The issue is so alarming that 10 different UN organisations joined forces through an Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, which seeks to halt the environmentally and socially destructive practices of fashion. Elisa Tonda, from UN Environment, explained this urgency: “The global production of clothing and footwear generates 8 % of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and, with manufacturing concentrated in Asia, the industry is mainly reliant on hard coal and natural gas to generate electricity. If we carry on with a business-as-usual approach, the greenhouse gas emissions from the industry will rise by almost 50 % by 2030.”

Fashion today is about obsession with outward image and appearance. Rarely do we as consumers consider what’s on the inside: the environmental cost. Now that we know, who will dare to take the bull by the horns?

2.10,375 punts

  1. a) The environmental cost of the clothes.
  2. b) The cost of the fashion show.
  3. c) The salary of the designers and models.
  4. d) The creativity of the designer clothes.
  1. a) Correcta

El text ho diu entre parèntesis: «there is a hidden price that Mother Nature pays (and which is not included in the price tag)».

  2. b) Descartada

El text no diu que no s’incloguin: separa «the amazing costs of such shows» del preu ocult que paga la natura.

  3. c) Descartada

2.20,375 punts

  1. a) because of its high consumption of water.
  2. b) because it spills tons of petrol into the oceans.
  3. c) and so, five million people cannot have access to clean water.
  4. d) because of its energy consumption.
  1. a) Correcta

Després de dir que és la segona indústria més contaminant, el text dona la xifra: «some 93 billion cubic metres of water—enough to meet the needs of five million people—are used by the fashion industry annually».

  2. b) Descartada

No es parla de petroli vessat: el text diu que les microfibres abocades a l’oceà són «which is the equivalent of 3 million barrels of oil», és a dir, una equivalència.

  3. c) Descartada

El text fa servir els cinc milions de persones com a mesura de l’aigua gastada («enough to meet the needs of five million people»), no diu que es quedin sense aigua neta.

  4. d) Descartada

2.30,375 punts

  1. a) has changed the way we buy and use clothes.
  2. b) clothes are being manufactured in a sustainable way.
  3. c) has no impact on the economy or the environment.
  4. d) produces more carbon emissions than planes or ships.
  1. a) Correcta

La UNCTAD ho explica així: «consumers are offered constantly changing collections at low prices, and encouraged to frequently buy and discard clothes».

  2. b) Descartada

És un objectiu, no un fet: «it is crucially important to ensure that clothes are produced as ethically and sustainably as possible».

  3. c) Descartada

Diu el contrari: parla de «a plethora of negative social, economic and environmental impacts».

  4. d) Descartada

Això es diu de tota la indústria, no de la moda ràpida: «the industry is responsible for more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined».

2.40,375 punts

  1. a) a large amount of.
  2. b) an indefinite quantity.
  3. c) a small number of.
  4. d) a group of.
  1. a) Correcta

«Plethora» significa una gran quantitat d’alguna cosa, sovint més de la necessària: aquí són molts els efectes negatius, «social, economic and environmental», de manera que «a large amount of» és l’opció que té aquest sentit.

  2. b) Descartada

La frase vol dir que són molts, i «an indefinite quantity» no expressa abundància.

  3. c) Descartada

Diu el contrari: són molts efectes, no pocs.

  4. d) Descartada

«A group of» no expressa abundància: la frase demana una idea de «molts».

2.50,375 punts

  1. a) Most water pollution all over the world comes from the textile industry.
  2. b) Water plays an important role in the process of making a pair of jeans.
  3. c) Making one pair of jeans pollutes as much as driving over 100 km.
  4. d) Microfibres enter the water we drink every time we wash our clothes.
  1. a) Correcta

És la falsa: el text diu que només una part ve del tèxtil, «around 20 % of global industrial water pollution is from dyeing and textile treatment».

  2. b) Descartada

És certa: «it takes around 7,500 litres of water to make just one single pair».

  3. c) Descartada

És certa: el procés equival a «like driving 111 kilometres».

  4. d) Descartada

És certa: «washing our clothes releases plastic microfibres and other pollutants into the environment».

2.60,375 punts

  1. a) people wore their clothes many more times than they do now.
  2. b) people disposed of their clothes after wearing them ten times.
  3. c) sending one lorry full of textiles to the landfill cost a lot of money.
  4. d) there was a higher production of new clothes.
  1. a) Correcta

El text compara amb el present: «the number of times we wear a garment has dropped one third compared to the early 2000s».

  2. b) Descartada

Això és el d’avui: «the average garment is worn ten times before being discarded».

  3. c) Descartada

El camió de tèxtils és una xifra actual: «one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or incinerated every second».

  4. d) Descartada

Diu el contrari: la producció va créixer després, amb «clothing production doubling between 2000 and 2014».

2.70,375 punts

  1. a) to end the negative social and environmental effects of the fashion industry.
  2. b) to prevent Asian countries from using fossil fuels in the fashion industry.

  1. a) Correcta

El text diu que l’Aliança «seeks to halt the environmentally and socially destructive practices of fashion».

  2. b) Descartada

Això del carbó a Àsia és una descripció, no un objectiu: «with manufacturing concentrated in Asia, the industry is mainly reliant on hard coal and natural gas».

  3. c) Descartada

  4. d) Descartada

Diu el contrari: «If we carry on with a business-as-usual approach, the greenhouse gas emissions from the industry will rise by almost 50 % by 2030».

2.80,375 punts

  1. a) it is very difficult to solve the environmental problem associated with fashion.
  2. b) consumers should take direct action to protect the environment.
  3. c) for some people, their appearance is more important than the environment.
  4. d) the environmental cost of fashion needs to be known more widely.
  1. a) Correcta

El paràgraf acaba amb una expressió que significa afrontar un problema difícil: «who will dare to take the bull by the horns?».

  2. b) Descartada

  3. c) Descartada

El text no parla d’algunes persones en concret: és una crítica general, «Fashion today is about obsession with outward image and appearance».

  4. d) Descartada

Now that we know», i pregunta qui s’atrevirà a actuar.

HOW AI CAN MAKE CANCER TREATMENT MORE EQUITABLE

Many are aware of the Cancer Moonshot—an ambitious and hopeful initiative of the US government to reduce cancer-related death rates by 50 % by the year 2047. It will take an army to achieve this goal, composed of the brightest minds and biggest hearts in healthcare, science, and technology. Many parties will be involved—the federal government, healthcare providers, researchers, patients, caregivers, and advocates, among others in both the public and private sectors. One of the most pivotal tools that can help propel us toward this high-minded goal is artificial intelligence (AI), which is poised to revolutionize cancer treatment.

The Moonshot plan identifies five priority areas, all of which AI has the potential to enhance. Two areas in particular lend themselves to AI: the call to deliver the latest cancer innovations to patients and communities and the aim of enhancing the oncology model to place cancer patients at the center of decision-making.

The history of cancer care has been a continual process of refining treatments through innovative processes and solutions. While these advancements represented significant strides toward personalizing cancer care, it has been a slow and historically inequitable process, with minority populations not having as much access to advanced diagnosis or care tools. AI has many distinct advantages over prior technologies. It continuously improves when trained on enormous datasets, making it both more accurate than prior methods and enabling it to distinguish subtleties across demographics, age, race, etc. It is relatively low-cost to deploy, runs instantly, and can be made accessible via cloud computing, which is now available in all populated continents. These advantages make AI a scalable solution that can uniquely optimize patients’ treatment plans across the globe, delivering efficient and personalized cancer care to a substantially larger population than prior technology.

One of the most promising developments is the rise of AI-enabled tests that can simultaneously prognosticate how tumors will progress and predict treatment benefits. These tests use unique deep-learning algorithms that assess digital images from patient biopsies and couple them with the patient’s clinical data. Clinicians can then take this information and build a personalized treatment plan; in some cases, this even means avoiding unnecessary treatments where the side effects outweigh the benefits for the patient.

The Moonshot initiative to deliver innovation to patients and communities is intended for all patients, not a select few. The generalizability of AI relies on the amount and variety of data that is used to build it. When AI is trained on datasets that properly represent diverse patient populations, it has the potential to provide greater insights for all, including historically underrepresented populations. In addition to helping bridge the gap in health disparities, AI can also serve as a conduit for increased communication between patients and clinicians by positioning patients at the center of decision-making about their care. How? By providing patients with more information about their illness, and therefore increasing confidence in their treatment plan. This confidence is a cornerstone of effective cancer treatment.

Patients must live with treatment decisions, both physically and mentally. Studies show that one key to treating cancer is for clinicians to create a patient-centered plan that incorporates multifaceted aspects of a person’s life. With AI-enabled tests, the patient and clinician can review the data together to align on whether the therapy selected is worth the adverse effects that could influence the patient’s lifestyle. In contrast, a lack of understanding of the options and benefits of the therapy can leave patients overwhelmed and under-committed to the treatment. This can decrease adherence to treatments and have detrimental effects on survival rates.

DANCE LIKE YOU’RE IN BRIDGERTON, PLAY SQUID GAME: WHY ARE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES BOOMING?

Welcome to the age of immersion. Last summer saw the launch of Stranger Things and Tomb Raider “experiences” in London, and an Alice in Wonderland “immersive cocktail experience” in Sheffield. By September, fans were able to re-enact Netflix’s Squid Game at Immersive Gamebox venues in London, Essex and Manchester. In the coming weeks, London will also host an experience based on the horror franchise Saw, while Cheshire will see thousands visit Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience. And that’s without mentioning the boom in immersive art experiences, the most recent of which — Frameless — has just opened in central London.

The buzzword everyone will tell you is immersive-interactive. As a small number of companies dominate the cultural landscape, it seems that each wants to build its own mini-Disneyland. But why are we suddenly obsessed with stepping into the screen? In an increasingly dark world, are we seeking escapism? Or do we just want loads of cool Instagrammable pictures?

“It’s really driven by a desire to find new ways to connect with our members and fans around the world,” says Greg Lombardo, head of live experiences at Netflix. The streaming service lost almost a million subscribers between April and July last year after subscription fees increased by £1 a month. The company is seemingly diversifying its income — tickets to Stranger Things: The Experience cost £52 per person, £62 on a Saturday. “We really wanted to offer people a chance to feel like they were the hero of that story, that they had the powers,” Lombardo says. Guests are divided into different coloured teams and allocated a hand gesture they can use to remotely crush cans, unlock doors and battle monsters as they wander Stranger Things-inspired sets. The experience features exclusive footage from the show’s actors as well as live actors who interact with the audience. Why do more and more people seek this out? Lombardo says the Stranger Things experience attracts all ages, while guests of The Queen’s Ball — a party based on Netflix’s hit show Bridgerton — are 87 % women aged 18-45. It is a prom for adults and some people even join fan-created social media groups to discuss how to prepare for the event.

Elizabeth Cohen is a communications professor at West Virginia University who studies audience responses to different types of media. She says fans have always wanted to enter fictional worlds but the internet allowed them to get their voices heard. “I think the internet made ‘geeking out’ more mainstream,” she says. “And what is mainstream is also more profitable.” Cohen says immersion is psychologically gratifying because people connect with others, relieve stress and get creative. Just as we can both watch and play sports, Cohen says we can now watch and play with shows. Does this mean we’re big babies? “Sports fans often go to great lengths to dress up in support of their team, put on face paint, collect memorabilia,” Cohen says. “But I’ve never heard anyone suggest that sports fandom was infantilising, so why is there a double standard for pop culture?”

Millions have been invested into immersion, but some experiences are rougher around the edges than others. Many last an hour — meaning prices seem high when you consider a whole day ticket to Disneyland Paris can cost just £50. It remains to be seen whether they will attract repeat customers, or if they’ll quickly become associated with the forced fun of work socials and first dates. Or perhaps high inflation will only increase the desire to step into the screen. If you think about shows like Stranger Things or Bridgerton, they are escapist stories. They allow us to forget, for a moment, things that might be more challenging in our lives.

  4. d) leisure experiences where people can go on spectacular roller-coasters.
  1. a) Descartada

  2. b) Correcta

Greg Lombardo, de Netflix, diu que volien oferir «a chance to feel like they were the hero of that story».

  3. c) Descartada

Disneyland només surt com a comparació: «a whole day ticket to Disneyland Paris can cost just £50».

  4. d) Descartada

No s’esmenta cap muntanya russa al text.

2.20,375 punts

  1. a) wonders why Disneyland is opening new franchises for adolescents.
  2. b) wonders why adolescents are obsessed with movies and series.
  3. c) wonders if immersion experiences make young adults become childish.
  4. d) wonders why immersion experiences are popular now.
  1. a) Descartada

Disneyland apareix a «each wants to build its own mini-Disneyland», una comparació sobre les empreses, no una pregunta sobre noves franquícies per a adolescents.

  2. b) Descartada

  3. c) Descartada

Aquest dubte apareix al quart paràgraf («Does this mean we’re big babies?»), no al segon.

  4. d) Correcta

Al segon paràgraf l’autora pregunta: «But why are we suddenly obsessed with stepping into the screen?».

2.30,375 punts

  1. a) has incorporated new ways of making profits.
  2. b) is making profits only through subscriptions.
  3. c) is offering its subscribers monthly discounts.
  4. d) is contacting Stranger Things fans around the world.
  1. a) Correcta

  4. d) Descartada

Lombardo parla de voler «connect with our members and fans around the world», però de fans en general: no diu que Netflix contacti amb els de Stranger Things.

2.40,375 punts

  1. a) Entrance fees are cheaper on weekdays.
  2. b) Guests can walk around sets inspired by the series.
  3. c) Only the show’s actors take part in it.
  4. d) Guests can pretend to fight against monsters.
  1. a) Descartada

  3. c) Correcta

2.50,375 punts

  1. a) attracts female Bridgerton fans of several ages.
  2. b) has boosted the number of Bridgerton viewers.
  3. c) is especially popular with men over 50.
  4. d) requires attendees to meet on a social media group first.
  1. a) Correcta

  4. d) Descartada

Només diu que «some people even join fan-created social media groups» per preparar-s’hi: alguns ho fan, però no és cap requisit.

2.60,375 punts

  1. a) immersive experiences can become stressful for guests.
  2. b) the fans’ contact with the fictional world has become normal.
  3. c) fictional immersive experiences should be based on sports.
  4. d) the fans’ participation in immersive experiences should be streamed.
  1. a) Descartada

Diu el contrari: per a Cohen la immersió és gratificant perquè «people connect with others, relieve stress and get creative».

  2. b) Correcta

Elizabeth Cohen explica que «fans have always wanted to enter fictional worlds but the internet allowed them to get their voices heard» i que Internet va fer aquest entusiasme més corrent («more mainstream»).

  3. c) Descartada

Compara els fans amb els aficionats esportius, que «often go to great lengths to dress up in support of their team», però no diu que les experiències hagin d’estar basades en esports.

  4. d) Descartada

2.70,375 punts

  1. a) Because immersion tends to be criticised more often than sports fandom.
  2. b) Because immersion experiences are never considered childish.
  3. c) Because people tend to make fun of sports fans who dress up.
  4. d) Because pop culture fandom helps people connect with their heroes.
  1. a) Correcta

Cohen pregunta: «I’ve never heard anyone suggest that sports fandom was infantilising, so why is there a double standard for pop culture?».

  2. b) Descartada

Sí que es considera infantil: el text planteja «Does this mean we’re big babies?».

  3. c) Descartada

2.80,375 punts

  1. a) will become symbolic of first dates and work gatherings.
  2. b) have come to stay.
  3. c) are becoming more expensive due to increasing inflation.
  4. d) give people the chance to escape from real difficulties.
  1. a) Descartada

Només ho planteja com a possibilitat: si «they’ll quickly become associated with the forced fun of work socials and first dates».

  2. b) Descartada

Tampoc ho afirma: «It remains to be seen whether they will attract repeat customers».

  3. c) Descartada

Parla d’inflació, però com a causa de més desig d’entrar a la pantalla: «high inflation will only increase the desire to step into the screen», no de preus que pugin per aquesta raó.

  4. d) Correcta

They allow us to forget, for a moment, things that might be more challenging in our lives».

HOW GLOBAL CLIMATE TARGETS ARE SET AND WHAT THEY MEAN

How much warming can the world bear? This question was one of the main issues discussed at the past UN climate change summit, known as COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland.

Six years ago, when countries came together in Paris for the COP21 summit, at which the Paris climate accord was shaped, they committed to limit the global average temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius (2C) above pre-industrial levels. However, even though the 2015 agreement set 2C as the minimum, it also suggested that countries should push for a more ambitious goal: 1.5C. But not all countries agreed, with oil and gas producing Saudi Arabia among the countries complaining about the more ambitious targets. Some officials argued that countries should maintain the less ambitious target so that they were not set up for failure.

A preliminary draft of the COP26 agreement reaffirmed the Paris agreement’s goal: limit Earth’s warming to well below 2C and pursue a target of 1.5C. But it did not commit to meeting the 1.5C mark. The difference between the two targets may seem small, but they represent different levels of effort for countries trying to limit their carbon footprints, and very divergent outcomes for the planet. A study released by the UK Met Office, Britain’s national weather service, found that 1 billion people could face heat stress, a potentially fatal combination of heat and humidity, if temperatures rise by 2C.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a UN body responsible for evaluating the scientific research on climate change, has warned that even an increase of 1.5C of global warming would result in significant differences, with increased heat waves and short cold seasons. The IPCC has found that an extreme heat event that would have occurred once per decade without human influence, would happen 4 times a decade with 1.5C of warming, and with 2C of warming there would be 5 extreme heat events.

The IPCC has also noted that the relative sea level will probably continue to rise throughout the 21st century and beyond. If temperatures do not increase more than 1.5C, over the next 2000 years sea levels could rise by as much as 3 meters, but it could be double that if temperatures grow by 2C, and be even worse if ice sheets in Antarctica become destabilized. Although a 2C increase would result in the number of people living in areas affected by extreme heat stress rising from 68 million today to 1 billion, a 4C rise could affect half of Earth’s population.

In their latest report, the IPCC estimated that the world would probably reach the 1.5C mark by 2040. Global temperatures would initially be 1.5C higher by the middle of the century, and then fall as emissions were cut further. This could avoid some of the worst outcomes. If nothing is done, the world might see a rise of 4.4C by the year 2100—with an extreme impact on life on Earth.

2.10,375 punts

  1. a) agreed to limit Paris global climate change.
  2. b) agreed to limit the increase in global temperatures to 2C.
  3. c) agreed to discuss oil and gas production.
  4. d) agreed to return to pre-industrial temperature levels.
  1. a) Descartada

L’opció no té sentit: París és la ciutat de la cimera («the Paris climate accord was shaped»), no una cosa que es limiti.

  2. b) Correcta

El text diu que a París els països «committed to limit the global average temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius (2C)». És la segona opció.

  3. c) Descartada

El petroli i el gas només serveixen per identificar l’Aràbia Saudita: «oil and gas producing Saudi Arabia among the countries complaining about the more ambitious targets».

2.20,375 punts

  1. a) was agreed to by all countries in the world.
  2. b) was signed by Saudi Arabia.
  3. c) was considered too difficult to reach by a number of countries.
  4. d) would still result in the death of 1 billion people.
  1. a) Descartada

No tots el van acceptar: «But not all countries agreed».

  2. b) Descartada

L’Aràbia Saudita era entre els qui es queixaven: «among the countries complaining about the more ambitious targets».

  3. c) Correcta

El text explica que «Some officials argued that countries should maintain the less ambitious target so that they were not set up for failure».

  4. d) Descartada

Mil milions és el nombre de persones que podrien patir estrès tèrmic amb 2C («1 billion people could face heat stress»), no el de morts amb l’objectiu d’1.5C.

2.30,375 punts

  1. a) was a firm commitment at the COP26 summit in Glasgow.
  2. b) represents a major difference with respect to the 2C target.
  3. c) guarantees the maximum reduction in a country’s carbon footprint.
  4. d) will have no effect on a country’s carbon footprint.
  1. a) Descartada

L’esborrany «did not commit to meeting the 1.5C mark»: no era un compromís ferm.

  2. b) Correcta

El text diu que els dos objectius «represent different levels of effort for countries trying to limit their carbon footprints, and very divergent outcomes for the planet».

2.40,375 punts

  1. a) There will be 5 extreme heat events in the next decade if no action is taken.
  2. b) Heat waves will become more frequent in the future.
  3. c) Extreme heat events will become increasingly rare if the 1.5C mark is met.
  4. d) Extreme heat events will happen once a year even if there is no rise in temperature.
  1. a) Descartada

Els cinc episodis depenen d’un augment de 2C: «with 2C of warming there would be 5 extreme heat events».

  2. b) Correcta

  4. d) Descartada

Sense influència humana passaria «once per decade», una vegada per dècada, no una vegada a l’any.

2.50,375 punts

  1. a) The relative sea level will probably keep on falling in this century.
  2. b) Sea levels could decrease by more than 3 meters over the next 2000 years.
  3. c) If ice sheets in Antarctica become destabilized, sea levels will rise.
  4. d) If temperatures rise by 2C, 2 billion people will die.
  1. a) Descartada

Diu el contrari: el nivell del mar «will probably continue to rise» durant aquest segle.

  2. b) Descartada

No baixaria: «sea levels could rise by as much as 3 meters».

  3. c) Correcta

El text diu que el nivell del mar podria pujar 3 metres, «double that if temperatures grow by 2C, and be even worse if ice sheets in Antarctica become destabilized».

  4. d) Descartada

No parla de dos mil milions de morts: amb 2C, «1 billion people could face heat stress», és a dir, mil milions de persones exposades.

2.60,375 punts

  1. a) might rise to a million if the temperature increases 2C.
  2. b) might rise to a hundred million if the temperature increases 4C.
  3. c) doesn’t reach a hundred million today.
  4. d) will represent most of the world’s population with a 4C rise.
  1. a) Descartada

  3. c) Correcta

  4. d) Descartada

El text diu «half of Earth’s population»: la meitat, no la majoria, i com a possibilitat («could affect»).

2.70,375 punts

  1. a) Global warming would not be recorded until 2040.
  2. b) Temperatures might start declining after 2050 if action is taken.
  3. c) Temperatures might keep on increasing after 2050 even if emissions are cut.
  4. d) Global warming might be stopped before the middle of the century.
  1. a) Descartada

L’escalfament ja existeix: l’IPCC calcula que «the world would probably reach the 1.5C mark by 2040», no que comenci aleshores.

  2. b) Correcta

El text diu que les temperatures «would initially be 1.5C higher by the middle of the century, and then fall as emissions were cut further».

  4. d) Descartada

A mitjan segle continuaria 1.5C més alt: «1.5C higher by the middle of the century».

2.80,375 punts

  1. a) Life on Earth will remain unaffected.
  2. b) Temperatures might rise by more than 4C by the end of the century.
  3. c) Global warming effects will not be as serious as expected.
  4. d) There will be a 4.4C temperature rise by 2040.
  1. a) Descartada

Diu el contrari: parla d’«an extreme impact on life on Earth».

  2. b) Correcta

El text diu: «If nothing is done, the world might see a rise of 4.4C by the year 2100».

  3. c) Descartada

No diu que els efectes hagin de ser menys greus del que s’esperava: avisa que retallar emissions «could avoid some of the worst outcomes», i per tant que, si no es fa, poden donar-se.

  4. d) Descartada

Els 4.4C són per a l’any 2100, no per al 2040: el 2040 és quan es calcula arribar a 1.5C.

SOCCER IS THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR SPORT. BUT WHO INVENTED IT?

Soccer is by far the world’s most popular sport, and for good reason—beloved by at least 265 million people worldwide, it’s easy to play in a random yard or field, and viewers instantly relate to the players racing across stadiums in different parts of the world. But if you’re looking for the earliest ancestor of all that running, kicking, and cooperating, be ready to turn back your watch. Here’s what you need to know about soccer’s ancient origins and why it’s the world’s favorite sport today.

The Chinese were the first to kick balls into nets for sport in the third century B.C., and the game known globally as football was formalized in England in the 19th century. But the predecessor of most modern ball games can be found in the Americas. “The idea of the team sport was invented in Mesoamerica,” says Mary Miller, a professor of the history of art at Yale University who has studied extensive evidence of the sport. In Mesoamerica, the vast historical region spanning from Mexico to Costa Rica, civilizations flourished well before Columbus “discovered” them, and many of them played a sport that involved a heavy ball made from a substance derived from tree resin.

It is unclear exactly where the game was invented, but it was popular across Mesoamerican cultures like the Teotihuacanos, Aztecs, and Maya beginning about 3,000 years ago. Its name varied—ullamaliztli in Aztec, pok-ta-pok or pitz in Maya. So did its rules, which included moves such as keeping the ball in play by bumping it with body parts or using racquets or bats.

Many of these games were played with rubber balls, which still exist in the archaeological record. Other evidence of game play ranges from ceramic vessels to more than 1,300 large stone courts that can be found across the region.

Aztec players bounced the ball back and forth between teams using only their hips and buttocks (feet or hands were off limits). They tried to hit the back wall of their opponents’ courts with just one bounce, often sustaining life-threatening injuries when they were hit with the hard, heavy ball. If a player managed to get it into a high ring on the opposing team’s side, it was an automatic win—and a major honor for the winner.

Though it was played as an everyday pickup sport, much like soccer or basketball, this ball game also held a sacred place in religion and warfare for Mesoamerican cultures. Aztec kings reportedly played it as a substitute for war, gaining ruling rights or diffusing diplomatic dramas with a game of ball. In Maya and Veracruz cultures, the stakes were even higher: the losers of some ritual games were sacrificed.

Though other cultures like Native Americans and Indigenous Australians played similar games, the modern sport that some people know as soccer—and many others know as football—was created in British schools. Although they had played variations of the game informally for centuries, the sport became formalized in the 19th century.

In the mid 19th century, developments in transportation, labor, and technology gave people the leisure and means to travel to competitive matches on mown lawn fields. By the 1840s, a variety of British schools created their own standards of play, making it possible to hold tournaments among players who all knew the same rules.

As the sport’s popularity ballooned, players banded together in the London Football Association. By the 1870s, some teams had begun to recruit widely, secretly paying working-class league members. Upper-class footballers wanted the sport to remain amateur, but in 1885, they finally agreed to allow professional players, enabling a further boom in the sport. By 1904, the sport was so popular it had gone international, and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) began that same year.

Soccer’s success skyrocketed from there. After the sport debuted in the 1908 Olympic Games and the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, professional soccer flourished. Today, FIFA remains the sport’s governing body, raking in $755.5 million in 2021 alone.

But the heart of the sport has always been on the field, where everyone from small children to seasoned pro athletes can enjoy the action. Soccer’s spirit is alive and well both in modern incarnations of the ball game and the millions of amateur and pro players who run and kick their way down an official or makeshift soccer pitch every day.

ASSATEAGUE’S WILD HORSES

Assateague Island is a 60 km long barrier island located on the East Coast of the United States, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland while the southern third is in Virginia. The Maryland section contains the majority of Assateague Island National Seashore; the Virginia section contains Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The island contains numerous marshes, bays and pristine beaches, and is a habitat for migratory birds and a wildlife sanctuary.

Assateague, however, is best known for its herds of wild horses. The “wild” horses on Assateague are actually feral animals, meaning that they are descendants of domestic animals that have reverted to a wild state. Horses tough enough to survive the scorching heat, abundant mosquitoes, stormy weather and poor quality food found on this remote, windswept barrier island, which have formed a unique wild horse society.

Local folklore describes the Assateague horses as survivors of a shipwreck off the Virginia coast. While this dramatic tale of struggle and survival is popular, there are no records yet that confirm it. The most plausible explanation is that they are the descendants of horses that were brought to barrier islands like Assateague in the late 17th century by mainland owners to avoid fencing laws and taxation of livestock.

The horses are split into two main herds, one on the Virginia side and one on the Maryland side of Assateague. They are separated by a fence at the Virginia/Maryland State line. These herds have divided themselves into bands of two to twelve animals and each band occupies a home range. The National Park Service manages the Maryland herd. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company owns and manages the Virginia herd, which is allowed to graze on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge through a special use permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The permit restricts the size of the herd to approximately 150 adult animals in order to protect the other natural resources of the wildlife refuge. It is the Virginia herd which is often referred to as the “Chincoteague” ponies.

Many visitors first learn about the Assateague horses from Marguerite Henry’s famous book Misty of Chincoteague. The story takes place during a traditional Chincoteague festival called “Pony Penning.’’ On the last Wednesday of July, the Virginia herd of horses is rounded up and made to swim from Assateague Island to nearby Chincoteague Island. On the following day most of the young foals are auctioned off. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department.

Assateague’s horses are beautiful, tough, and wild. They have learned to survive in a harsh environment. Feeding and/or petting them is detrimental to both visitors and horses. Horses can get sick from human food. Those that learn to come up to the road to beg for food are often hit and killed by cars. Visitors are kicked, bitten and knocked down every year as a direct result of getting too close to the wild horses. Treating wild horses like tame animals takes away the wildness that makes them special. The park rangers warn visitors that they must protect their family by respecting the horses: people must give the horses the space they need to be wild.

There are few places in the United States where you can view wild horses. Due to their complex social structure the Assateague horses display a wide range of unique behaviors. Visitors can take advantage of the opportunity to view these horses in a natural habitat. With careful management, the wild horses will continue to thrive on Assateague Island and provide enjoyment to thousands of nature enthusiasts, photographers, and people who just love horses!

GINKGO TREES NEARLY WENT EXTINCT. HERE’S HOW WE SAVED THESE ‘LIVING FOSSILS’

On the streets of Manhattan and Washington, D.C., in neighborhoods in Seoul and parks in Paris, ginkgo trees are gradually losing their bright yellow leaves in reaction to the first frigid winter air. Such leaf drop, gradual at first, and then suddenly, carpets streets with golden, fan-shaped leaves every year. But around the world, scientists are documenting evidence of the event happening later and later, a possible indication of climate change.

“People would ask us, ‘When should I come out to see peak ginkgo color?’ and we would say the 21st of October,” says David Carr, the director of the University of Virginia’s Blandy Experimental Farm, which is home to The Ginkgo Grove, an arboretum with over 300 ginkgo trees.

Carr, who’s been at The Ginkgo Grove since 1997, says the trend toward warmer falls and later-in-the-season leaf color is a noticeable one. “Nowadays it seems to be closer to the end of October or the first week of November.” But this is not the first time the ancient species has confronted major climate changes. And the story of ginkgos is not the familiar one of human carelessness with nature.

Thanks to fossils found in North Dakota, scientists know the species Ginkgo biloba has existed in its current form for 60 million years; it has genetically similar ancestors dating back 170 million years to the Jurassic Period. In its nearly 200-million-year timeline, “they gradually were reduced. They almost went extinct. Then they have this renewal that comes from the association with humans,” says Peter Crane, author of the book Ginkgo and one of the world’s foremost Ginkgo experts.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, an organization that tracks the survival of Earth’s species, classifies the tree as endangered in the wild. Only a few rare populations are thought to potentially exist in China. When you walk on those bright golden fans scattered on some rain-darkened sidewalk this fall, you’re having a close encounter with a rare thing—a species that humans rescued from natural oblivion and spread around the world. It’s “such a great evolutionary story,” Crane says, “and also a great cultural story.”

On Earth today there are five different types of plants that produce seeds: flowering plants, the most abundant; conifers, plants with cones; gnetales, a diverse group of about 70 species including desert shrubs, tropical trees, and vines; cycads, another ancient group of palm-like trees—and the lonely ginkgo. In the plant kingdom’s Ginkgoaceae family, there is just one living species, Ginkgo biloba.

Scientists think the world once contained many different species of ginkgo too. Fossilized plants found in a coal mine in central China that date back 170 million years show ginkgo-like trees with only slight variations in the shape of their leaves and number of seeds. The species was thought to be extinct in the wild until the early 20th century, when a supposedly undomesticated population was found in western China. A paper published in 2004 disagreed, suggesting instead that those trees had been cultivated by ancient Buddhist monks—but suggesting that other ginkgo havens might be found in the southwest of the country. Then in 2012, a new paper cited evidence that a wild population did indeed exist in southwestern China’s Dalou Mountains. Those wild populations are a potential treasure of diversity for crossbreeding as scientists seek to improve the genetic composition of the domesticated species.

Crane is not worried about the future of the ginkgo, though. The popularity of the species will help it survive. “Though its status in the wild may be precarious and difficult to access, it is a plant that is unlikely to ever go extinct,” Crane says.

SHE WAS SOLD TO A STRANGER SO HER FAMILY COULD EAT AS AFGANISTAN CRUMBLES

Parwana Malik, a 9-year-old girl with dark eyes and rosy cheeks, giggles with her friends as they play jump rope in a dusty clearing. But Parwana’s laughter disappears as she returns home, where she’s reminded of her fate: she’s being sold to a stranger as a child bride.

The man who wants to buy Parwana says he’s 55, but to her, he’s “an old man” with white eyebrows and a thick white beard. She worries he will beat her and force her to work in his house. But her parents say they have no choice. For four years, her family has lived in an Afghan displacement camp in the northwestern Badghis province, surviving on humanitarian aid and menial work earning a few dollars a day. But life has only gotten harder since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan.

As international aid dries up and the country’s economy collapses, they’re unable to afford basic necessities like food. Her father already sold her 12-year-old sister to someone else several months ago. Parwana is one of many young Afghan girls sold into marriage as the country’s humanitarian crisis deepens. Hunger has pushed some families to make heartbreaking decisions, especially as the brutal winter approaches. “Day by day, the numbers are increasing of families selling their children,” said Mohammad Naiem Nazem, a human rights activist in Badghis. “Lack of food, lack of work, and the families feel they have to do this.”

Abdul Malik, Parwana’s father, can’t sleep at night. Ahead of the sale, he’s “broken” with guilt, shame and worry. He had tried to avoid selling her and his wife resorted to begging other camp residents for food. But he felt he had no choice if he wants to feed his family. “We are eight family members”. “I have to sell to keep other family members alive.” The money from Parwana’s sale will only sustain the family for a few months, before Malik has to find another solution, he said.

Parwana said she hoped to change her parents’ minds—she had dreams of becoming a teacher, and didn’t want to give up her education. But her pleas were futile.

On October 24, Qorban, the buyer, who only has one name, arrived at her home and handed 200,000 Afghanis (about $2,200) in the form of sheep, land and cash to Parwana’s father. Qorban didn’t describe the sale as a marriage, saying he already had a wife who would look after Parwana as if she were one of their own children. “(Parwana) was cheap, and her father was very poor and he needs money,” Qorban said. “She will be working in my home. I won’t beat her. I will treat her like a family member. I will be kind.”

Since the Taliban’s takeover, stories like Parwana’s have been on the rise. Though marrying off children under 15 is illegal nationwide, it has been commonly practiced for years, especially in more rural parts of Afghanistan. And it has only spread since August, driven by widespread hunger and desperation. The problem is particularly acute for Afghan girls, who have stayed home and watched their brothers return to secondary school since the Taliban takeover. The Taliban said it is working on a plan to allow girls to return too, but have not said when that could happen or what conditions may be imposed. The uncertainty combined with rising poverty has pushed many girls into the marriage market. And once a girl is sold as a bride, her chances of continuing an education or pursuing an independent path are close to zero.
